Contest Season

by Steve Perry on 02/25/11

Here in Motor City, it's model contest season.  We kick it off with the model car contest put on by the Downriver Model Car Club at the Detroit Autorama custom car show this weekend.  What a rush: just a short walk away, million dollar rods are being judged for the coveted Ridler Award.  In March, the Detroit Area Auto Modelers (DAAM!) put on their Motor City Madness contest.  Both are regional events, but bring out national class modeling.  At the end of April, I'll be at GSLXXIII in Salt Lake City.  This really is the premier model car contest, put on by Mark Gustavson and his crew from the Model Car Museum.  What an event!
I've been doing pretty well at contests the last few years, but it takes a big commitment of work to be competitive.  Some say that model car building is a dying hobby, but I'm here to say that the state of the art has never been higher.  No matter what your level, push yourself a little bit and enter a contest, it will make you feel good about your work and the hobby.
